Today, up to 40 young people should have woken up on board our sail training vessels, Donald Searle, Rona II and Merrilyn on the fourth day of their Sail Training Voyage. They should have been under the watchful eye of 18 of the UK’s finest volunteer sail trainers, while they undertook exciting and fun passages, learned new skills, gained qualifications, made new friends and life-long connections. Unfortunately, like so many others this year, their voyage was cancelled due to COVID-19.

When cancelling this and other voyages throughout the season, we spoke to many young people, parents, caregivers, and our own volunteers and their disappointment was palpable. So too, however, was their understanding and support for the Rona Sailing Project and the position we were in. All our young sailor’s were offered full refunds or the option to roll their fees over to 2021. We were very pleased that the majority opted to roll their voyage fee over and they along with eveyone who was due to sail this season have now all been offered alternative dates in 2021.
There are some differences in the 2021 programme compared to previous years, and we have built in several contingencies in response to the evolving situation, but all will be fulfilling, fun and safe voyages. Crew can look forward gaining RYA qualifications, completing DofE awards, gaining Scott and Amory Awards and progressing within the RSP. If you haven’t signed up to a voyage yet, please look at the 2021 programme and then email ann@ronasailingproject.org.uk with queries or information on how to secure your berth. Please note that we are experiencing a high demand for our berths at the moment, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
We really look forward to hearing from you!
Like so many others, we have been heavily impacted by COVID-19. Through this unprecedented time, we have been reminded what makes the Rona Sailing Project unique and strong; supporters such as ATSO (UK Sail Training), donors, trustees, and the incredible volunteer Afterguard. Once again, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has continued to support the Rona Sailing Project, ensuring that we will be back on the water in 2021.
